Where Fathom makes a strong case

Lowest cost per client. At 50 clients Fathom Pro lists at about $17.50 per client per month. We cost roughly two and a half times that. If reporting is something you absorb into an existing fee, Fathom keeps that cost down.

Desktop and international ledgers. Fathom connects QuickBooks Desktop, MYOB Desktop, Sage 50, Xero and FreeAgent. We connect QuickBooks Online. Books on desktop or non-US ledgers belong on Fathom today.

Ready-made FP&A modules. 3-way cash flow forecasting, budgets and multi-currency consolidations with eliminations come built in, and consolidated groups are free. If you want one standard forecasting structure for every client, it's there out of the box.

A cheap firm-side check-in. At $67/mo for 100 companies, Portfolio is an inexpensive way to glance across a book on standard financials. If that's all you need, it's hard to argue with the price.

When to pick Fathom over us: your clients run desktop ledgers like QuickBooks Desktop or Sage 50, or you need reporting priced low enough to eat the cost inside your current fee. In either case, start the Fathom trial. It's a solid tool for that job.

Where Pineapple Analyst is genuinely better

A whole-book view you design, not a fixed screen. Fathom Portfolio is a set layout on standard financials, and anything deeper means moving clients to Pro. Our consolidated view puts every client in one place and lets you compare whatever matters: industries against each other, averages across the book, clients ranked by growth, margin or anything in HubSpot. Prompt it yourself, or have us build it.

Customization without the formula fight. Fathom's reviewers say custom formulas are hard to build and forecasting formulas need more control. Ours builds whatever you describe: a hiring scenario, a new dashboard page, a view that lines up revenue against pipeline. With us the question is never "can it be built." It's "what's the right prompt." Build it once, save it as a template, and roll it out across your whole book.

The whole business, not just the accounting file. Fathom connects ledgers; anything else comes in through a spreadsheet, and its own reviewers ask for CRM and web analytics sources. We connect HubSpot today and build any custom integration a firm needs, CRM, marketing, operations or industry-specific, as part of onboarding.

AI your clients can actually use. Fathom's Commentary Writer drafts text for advisors; clients can't use it by default, and Fathom's broader AI plans have no launch dates. Ours is live: switch on the AI analyst for a client and they can ask "why did margin drop in March?" and then "which customers drove it?" It answers from a custom knowledge base for your firm and each client.

Useful on day one. Fathom's reviewers cite a learning curve even with onboarding support. A client goes live on Pineapple Analyst in under 5 minutes, and if you'd rather not build at all, we'll do it for you. When you're stuck, an AI support agent answers right away and real people are a message away.

Brand the experience, not just the report. Fathom puts your logo on reports. We put your brand on the whole client experience on every plan, with unlimited read-only client users, so it reads as your firm's product.

How to decide

  1. Do you need a quick look across your book, or real comparisons? If a fixed screen on standard financials is enough, Fathom Portfolio fits. If you want to compare industries, averages and rankings on any metric, we fit.
  2. Should clients read commentary or ask their own questions? If a polished report with written commentary is the deliverable, Fathom fits. If you want custom dashboards built from a prompt, and an AI analyst for the clients who should be asking questions, we fit.
  3. Does your work stop at the accounting file? If financials are all your clients need, Fathom covers it, and desktop ledgers point there. If you want sales pipeline, marketing and operations next to the numbers, that's us.
